Like any physical activity, spiritual and meditative practices also require their own materials. Malas, among other things, remain one of the most popular religious and spiritual accessories.
Mala means "garland". It is specially designed to facilitate the recitation of mantras among Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists. Each time believers recite a mantra, they set aside a bead. This accessory helps you to concentrate better and brings you inner peace and serenity.
Malas can consist of different numbers of beads, but the most sacred and energetic malas are those composed of 108 beads.
Why 108 beads on malas?
108 is a sacred number in several religions, both Western, such as Christianity, and Eastern, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism.

In the Christian religion, the number 108 refers to spirituality that heals the human soul: the number 108 is the result of 9, which is a symbol of spiritual knowledge, multiplied by 12, which is an important number as it is present in the Bible and also refers to the 12 spiritual meridians.
For Buddhists, the three digits represent emptiness (0), consciousness of God (1), and infinity (8). They also represent:
- The 108 trials Buddha underwent to achieve enlightenment.
- The 108 names of Buddha.
- The 108 repetitions necessary for the "Gayatri mantra" (mantra of peace).
- The 108 mudras (ritual gestures) in Tantra.
- The 108 asanas (postures) in Yoga.
What materials are the 108 beads made of?
108-bead malas come in several materials: Bodhi seeds, Rudraksha seeds, or natural stones. They can also be adorned with a symbol to enhance their benefits, such as the Buddha head symbol, the Tibetan bell, or the Lotus flower.
Each material brings specific benefits. For example: Sandalwood, considered a lucky wood, will help you gain self-confidence. Bodhi seeds will help you find the path to absolute wisdom. And finally, Jade stone brings daily happiness by making your life harmonious.
