How to Use a 108-Bead Mala in Meditation?

Jewelry and accessories made of natural stones have very strong effects on the person wearing them. This is why some spiritual and meditative practices recommend wearing these accessories for beneficial use for the body. Among these essential accessories for meditation, we find the Mala.

What is a Mala?

A mala is a Hindu and Buddhist rosary made up of 108 beads. A true Mala is made from natural stones and materials, such as Jade stone or Bodhi seeds.

This ancient multi-strand accessory can be worn as a bracelet around the wrist or as a necklace around the neck. It has beneficial effects on the body and mind of the person wearing it. To fully enjoy its benefits, the Mala is an excellent meditation accessory.

How to meditate with a Mala?

The Mala is a well-known accessory in spiritual and meditative practices. For effective use, it is advisable to follow certain steps:

  • Sit in the Lotus position with a straight back.
  • Hold the Mala with your right hand, placing your thumb above the beads and your index finger below them.
  • You can choose to keep your eyes open or closed.
  • Take time to do a breathing exercise to balance yourself and prepare for meditation.
  • Become aware of your surroundings by activating your five senses.
  • By becoming aware of the place and what surrounds you, calm your mind for better concentration.
  • Repeat your breathing exercise, inhaling and exhaling slowly and deeply.
  • Use your thumb to slide a bead of the Mala downwards (you can use both hands for this).
  • You can choose to recite a particular mantra or prayer while touching each bead of your Mala.

If you lose focus sometimes, that's okay. You must fight against these distracting thoughts by using the Mala and concentrating on the "Here and Now".

What is the purpose of the Mala in meditation?

In addition to being a unisex accessory with many benefits, the Mala is an excellent tool for meditation and practicing Yoga.

  • The mala helps the mind stay awake.
  • It helps you regain your calm.
  • It helps you learn to concentrate.
  • It helps you control your thoughts.
  • It makes it easier for you to recite your mantras and prayers.
